Share in £100 million
Michelin has launched a campaign called 'Stop Thirsty Tyres'.
Based on research compiled from several industry bodies and motoring organisations, the tyre manufacturer estimates that there is the potential to cut the nation's £12 billion annual commercial vehicle fuel bill by £100 million.
According to Michelin, hauliers existing tyres could be the key to improving fuel efficiency and good tyre management can make a significant contribution to savings.
Michelin's commercial director UK operations, Chris Bloor, says: 'Good tyre management starts with selecting the right tyre for the specific application and then maintaining the correct tyre pressures, ensuring correct wheel alignment, replacing missing valve caps and regrooving tyres will ensure maximum tyre life and will reduce fuel consumption.
'Expenditure on diesel for a typical 44-tonne artic comprises about 62% of its total running costs and with tyres accounting for just 6%, few fleet managers fully appreciate the direct relationship between tyres and fuel economy,' he adds.
To support its campaign, Michelin has launched a website. www.stopthirstytyres.com provides comprehensive information on the issues and factors that affect fuel consumption.
