'Average speed', speed cameras on A77
New A77 average speed cameras aimed at reducing accidents are set to catch unsuspecting drivers speeding between camera positions
The first ever 'average speed' safety camera system was launched on
July 14 by Scottish Minister for Justice, Cathy Jamieson MSP.
Unlike the conventional GATSO camera, the new cameras can also measure the average speed of a vehicle between cameras. The technology tackles the practise of speeding between known fixed camera positions.
The new cameras cover a 46km stretch of the A77 between Bogend Toll, north of Ayr, to Ardwell south of Girvan.
The digital SPECs cameras are unlike any previously seen on Scotland's roads and the Scottish Parliament says they are part of a range of measures coordinated through the A77 Safety Group to help cut the number of deaths and serious injuries occuring on the road.
