Stan Robinson fleet rolls out sat-nav for drivers

New and regular drivers save time and fuel and avoid jams
Stan Robinson (Stafford) has equipped 65 vehicles in its national fleet with VDO Dayton satellite navigation systems.

Managing director Stan Robinson says: 'We began installing VDO Dayton MS 3200 monochrome systems to assist new drivers on multi-drop operations navigate their way.

'By the time we had installed 10 of them they were proving themselves to be so efficient - not only with new drivers but with our regular drivers too - that we decided to upgrade to the full-colour MS 5400 unit.

'Currently, we have 55 of these in service.

'Our multi-drop drivers spend five or ten minutes before starting off programming in their day's drops, which we find is time well spent. The principal benefits we gain are a reduction in time wasted spent driving round looking for destinations and an according saving in fuel.

'Also, as there is now no need to rely on maps, our drivers are free to concentrate on their driving, which I believe potentially enhances our safety in operation.'

Stan Robinson (Stafford) operates about 150 trucks from four bases, Stafford, Glasgow, Teesside and Devon, each of which has vehicles equipped with VDO Dayton satellite navigation systems.

The MS 3200 is a stand-alone monochrome turn-by-turn navigation system with a detachable 3.7in LCD display. It is suitable for retro-fitting in most vehicles.

MS 5400 is a stand-alone full colour GPS navigation system that can accept a rear view camera and a TV tuner. The 5.8in widescreen display is detachable and comes with an integrated speaker and offers scrolling map/split screen display and full remote control operation.

Both the MS 3200 and MS 5400 can be equipped to receive Traffic Message Channel, providing the user with live traffic information and the ability to dynamically reroute journeys to avoid any traffic hold-ups ahead. There is also the option of an accident black spot / fixed camera information service.
