Free driver development training in Scotland
The Scottish Road Haulage Modernisation Fund continues to sponsor the Safe And Efficient Driving Scheme in Scotland
The Scottish Executive has awarded a contract to provide driver
development training for up to 40 instructors and 560 HGV
drivers. This training is being funded as part of the Scottish
Road Haulage Modernisation Fund and will help HGV drivers to further
develop their safe and fuel-efficient driving techniques. The Road
Haulage Association (RHA) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA)
are supporting the delivery of the scheme.
The training programme is free to drivers in Scotland up until 31 March 2007 and will:
• Provide training for 40 specialist SAFED instructors;
• Develop the driving skills of 500 experienced drivers to the SAFED skills;
• Develop 60 newly licensed drivers to the SAFED skills.
Benefits
Drivers participating in a similar scheme in England achieved fuel efficiency savings averaging about 9% on the day. It is also expected that improvements in safety as a result of SAFED training will reduce the number of accidents, reduce the stress on drivers and ultimately reduce insurance premiums. Company case studies will be published highlighting the actual benefits that result from driver development training. Earlier results from the scheme in England can be found at www.safed.org.uk
Costs
There is no charge for drivers from small companies. Drivers from medium sized companies who provide their own truck will also receive training free of charge. A small fee applies to other participants.
There will be a small charge to instructors wishing to participate in the programme. This charge is fully redeemable once instructors start to train drivers under the programme.
