Michelin acts to halt sales of Asian rip offs
Sales representatives from Michelin's Truck Tyre Division have detected Asian replicas of Michelin tyres in the European market
In a statement to the trade press, the manufacturer says: 'The
counterfeiting primarily concerns the tread patterns of Michelin truck
tyres. It represents misuse of Michelin's expertise and is designed to
trick customers into believing that the fake tyres deliver the same
performance as the real product. But the imitation products do not
offer the same performance as the Michelin tyres, notably in terms of
traction and durability, and therefore jeopardise the safety of their
owners, as well as that of road users in general.'
Michelin adds that safety has always been its number one priority and has put measures in place to protect customers against the fake tyres.
Over 5,000 European distributors have been notified of the risks of selling counterfeit goods and Michelin says it will take legal action against any dealer who commits a violation. Proceedings were recently brought against a European distributor who sold truck tyres from Asia imitating the Michelin tread pattern and Michelin has informed European Union authorities of the risks posed by these counterfeit tyres.
In its statement the company adds: 'Michelin condemns these acts of piracy and will join government and EU authorities in deploying all necessary measures to protect its technology and to ensure the safety of road users.'
