Security is being stepped up at Southampton Docks. To meet Department for Transport regulations Southampton Container Terminals has to carry out random searches of empty containers and check container seals and any accompanying paperwork on lorries that enter the terminal.

Now all vehicles (including lorries) will be liable to be searched before entering the terminal. These searches, which are conducted on the instructions of the department's security division, Transec, will include:

  • A physical search of all cab occupants (male and female) who wish to enter the terminal, including their baggage and personal possessions.
  • Basic questioning of the driver and any passenger.
  • Searches under seats, behind sun visors, the various storage areas within the cab, sleeping area etc.
  • The cab exterior including the engine compartments.
  • Under the vehicle.
  • Container/trailer exterior.

Searchers are mainly looking for firearms or explosives. If any prohibited items are found, the driver or occupants will not be permitted to travel with these items.

The searches are being carried out under Regulation (EC) No.725/2004 on Enhancing Ship and Port Facility Security.

Searches will only be conducted on vehicles at the point of access onto the terminal (ie, Transfer Area 1, Transfer Area 2 and the quay). If a lorry is selected for a cab search, the driver will be directed to an area where the search can be conducted in safety.

The new procedure applies to all ports but you need to check for local variations
