The haulage industry is the backbone of the Scottish economy yet it is being undermined by unfair competition and increasing regulation.

Hauliers are not in a position to be able to absorb the increased costs they face, but if they are passed on to customers, those customers themselves face difficulty and may seek a cheaper alternative - primarily in the form of a foreign operator.

In addition, HGV drivers are becoming increasingly disillusioned as a result of the effective reduction in their earning capacity and the increase in record keeping expected of them. This is adding to the driver shortage that already exists. Action must be taken to ensure that Scottish hauliers are able to continue to provide the service upon which the Scottish economy depends.

Phil Flanders, Director, has on behalf of the RHA,  petitioned the Scottish Parliament to conduct an inquiry into the future prospects for the Scottish haulage industry and any knock-on impact for the Scottish economy.
